Ready for a clear-out at home? There are useful places for your unwanted or spare stuff...use this new Christchurch guide.
Buy recycled goods and “close the loop” on the way resources are used. Here’s just a small sample:
* Ecofleece clothing is made from recycled PET plastic containers (but remember that unlike wool it will not decay naturally after use as your clothing, and ends up persisting in landfill)
* Waste wool is used to make ceiling and wall insulation. Examples: TerraLana Ph 0800 485 262 www.terralana.co.nz and Latitude Ph 376 4688 www.latitudeinsulation.com
* Each “Composta” brand 230 litre compost bin from Alto is made from recycled milk bottles. Refer to their website www.alto.co.nz for stockists. Other Alto recycled products with the Environmental Choice' label are listed at www.environmentalchoice.org.nz/standards/EC06_product_list.html
* Refurbished computers and associated equipment and software from Molten Media 205A Wordsworth St. Christchurch Ph: 377 1154 www.molten.org.nz/index.html
* Other plastic products – some household items, such as clothes hangers, buckets, baskets, pegs, also rubber door mats, garden hose, are being made from recovered materials. Read the label to choose those in preference.
* Copier and ink-jet printing paper – some are up to 100 per cent recycled fibres. Look for details on the labels before you buy.
* Toilet paper rolls - several recycled varieties are imported, such as Safe http://www.planetark.com/productspage.cfm/newsid/11/newsDate/10/story.htm and Earthcare (Available by home delivery from Foodtown/Woolworths internet shopping, if not at your local supplier.) https://www.foodtown.co.nz/HomeShopping/ and at Woolworths: https://www.woolworths.co.nz/HomeShopping/
* Tyres – retreading is a form of recycling. Ask your tyre retailer for advice on safety. Find suppliers here. http://www.finda.co.nz/business/ar/christchurch-city/k/?k=retread+tyres What happens to old tyres in NZ: http://www.mfe.govt.nz/publications/waste/product-stewardship-endoflife-tyres-may06/html/page4.html
